What are meme coins?

These coins are tokens from an internet meme. These virtual plays are often humorous or ironic in nature, as they are created for entertainment.

Meme coins, meme crypto, and meme tokens all refer to the same thing. Not all cryptocurrency developers have the same goals, those who create these coins mostly just want to have fun. The play itself is a joke. And the vastness of the web and its memes that appear there every day is perfect for that. These pieces can also be created by surfing on a series that is a hit internationally, but most are in the likeness of animals, very often dogs.

These currencies remain highly volatile and unpredictable; for some, they only have value as collectibles. The emotions and opinions of the investment community cause its price to fluctuate massively. Its detractors consider that they have no fundamental value like Bitcoin or Ethereum.

Their price can unexpectedly explode after a marketing stunt or a tweet from a personality before falling so quickly. Pejoratively, in the crypto community, they are called shit coins. But some have managed to reach very high levels of capitalization. This is the case of the very first meme corner to have been created.

This is Dogecoin (DOGE). Programmer Billy Markus was inspired by a popular Shiba Inu dog meme on the internet. His colleague, Jackson Palme, then took part in the project to create a viable cryptocurrency. This token with the logo of a Shiba’s head entered the market at the end of 2013. This whole project was basically designed in the first place to mock the rising popularity of Bitcoin at the time. Today, Dogecoin even has a descendant, the Baby DogeCoin, launched in June 2021.
